Safety First
The xTool P2 is a powerful 55W CO2 laser. It can cut and engrave wood, acrylic, leather, and more. It can also cause serious injury or start fires if misused.
Requirements
You must complete this safety tutorial and pass a short quiz before using the laser cutter unsupervised.
Hazards
| Hazard | Prevention |
|---|---|
| Eye damage | Never operate with the lid open. Always use the red-dot pointer for alignment. |
| Fire | Never leave a cut unattended. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. |
| Toxic fumes | Ensure the exhaust system is running. Never cut PVC or vinyl. |
| Burns | The material and bed can be hot after cutting. Let them cool. |
Prohibited Materials
Never cut or engrave:
- PVC, vinyl, or ABS (releases toxic chlorine gas)
- Polycarbonate (discolors and cracks)
- Fiberglass or carbon fiber
- Metals (the P2 cannot cut metal)
- Unknown plastics
Pre-Cut Checklist
- Exhaust fan is on and venting outside
- Material is flat and secured
- Focus is set correctly for material thickness
- Job preview looks correct in xTool Creative Space
- You will stay with the machine for the entire job
- Fire extinguisher is accessible
Emergency Procedures
If a fire starts:
- Lift the lid immediately (this stops the laser beam)
- Use the CO2 fire extinguisher
- Do not open the main exhaust (can feed oxygen to the fire)
- Notify a staff member
Quiz
